Cal State East Bay will host writer and activist Staceyann Chin on Thursday, March 5, in celebration of Women’s History Awareness Month.

Chin, an “out poet and political activist” since 1998, will share poetry and lead a community dialogue examining the theme “Our Bodies.”

Best known as a co-writer and performer in Russell Simmons’ Tony Award-winning “Def Poetry Jam” on Broadway, Chin is currently the poet-in-residence at The Culture Project. Her memoir “The Other Side of Paradise" was published in 2009, and she regularly speaks and performs at universities around the country.

Accolades for Chin and her work include the 2009 New York State Senate Special Human Rights Award, the 2008 Safe Haven Award from Immigration Equality, the 2008 Honors from the Lesbian AIDS Project, and the 2007 Power of the Voice Award from the Human Rights Campaign.

Staceyann Chin’s presentation will take place Thursday, March 5, from 12:15-1:15 p.m. in the University Union Multipurpose Room.
